The Abuja division of the Federal High Court has refused to grant former JAMB registrar Dibu Ojerinde bail on alleged fraud preferred against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Justice Obiora Egwuatu declined the oral application for bail by counsel to the defendant, P.O Olorunishola, after the ICPC lawyer, Ebenezer Shogunle, opposed the submission.
Mr Olorunishola stated, “We have just been served this morning, and I have not been able to go through it. He has a case in Minna with his passport at the state high court. And that the same case is coming up tomorrow at Minna. He is still available here, so he cannot run away.
“There is nothing to fear if he will run away. If it is Nigeria of these days, he would have produced a medical report.”
However, Mr Shogunle countered, saying, “We oppose the application for temporary bail. It cannot work, as said by the defence counsel that he will appear in court, that can be taking care of, the state has facilities to move detainees.”
Justice Obiora Egwuatu adjourned the case until July 8.
The ex-JAMB registrar is facing an allegation of misappropriating about N900 million.
