The Federal government has honoured 62 Nigerian Ambassadors-In-Situ with letters of commission in recognition of their diligent service to the nation and the sacrifices they have made over the years to project the image of the country globally.
The ambassadors-in-situ are those from the rank of grade level 16 and above in the Nigerian Civil Service, who have distinguished themselves while serving in the foreign missions.
The minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, who presided over the investiture ceremony and presented the letters of commission to Ambassadors-In-Situ in Abuja on Monday, praised the envoys, adding that the nation owes them a great deal of gratitude.
The minister said although the honour might have been delayed, it was a moment that brought joy to the recipients as their efforts had not been in vain.
He said, “I would like to congratulate you all. It has been a historical injustice that has been righted where you have people that have served so passionately, so diligently and so effectively for the country over so many years. You have made huge sacrifices and the country owes each and every one of you gratitude.
“At the international stage, Nigeria is still reckoned with. Nigeria is still able to get votes to deliver Nigerians into very important international positions. Nigeria is able, as I always say, maintain excellent relations with every country and this is your legacy. You have been able to get that double respect for Nigeria.
“You have engaged the international organisations and countries of the world. In West Africa, Africa, the UN and other countries of the world, Nigeria is looked up to because of your efforts. You deserve this recognition.”
Speaking on behalf of the Ambassadors –In-Situ, Adesuyi Adesola Adejumoke, lauded the federal government for the honour accorded the envoys, stressing that it calls for more commitment on their part.
