The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Akwa Ibom State, Mike Igini has instituted a one billion naira libel lawsuit against the South South Zonal Organising Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Dr Blessing Agbomhere.
According to the legal document sighted by Lawyard and filed by Igini’s Counsel, Clement Onwemunor, SAN, Agbomhere made libellous comments when he featured on Arise TV to discuss the political affairs of the APC in Akwa-Ibom.
Agbomhere said, “Mike Igini has abused the privilege of his office, he is partial/biased against the interest of APC in Akwa Ibom State, he is working for PDP in Akwa Ibom State, he is a ceremonial consultant to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State in electoral matters, he has compromised the values of INEC, he is a hatchet man hired by the PDP to work for them in INEC, shamelessly defending the rights of political parties and that he lives in the Lodge of the Government of Akwa Ibom State…… that he has videos of him driving in and coming out…”
The comments of the APC South South Zonal Organising Secretary followed what he deemed as Igini’s hatred of the APC, particularly, refusing to recognise the Federal High Court ruling which authenticated the Stephen Leo Ntukekpo leadership of the APC in Akwa Ibom State.
Onwemunor, SAN, in the prelitigation letter defended Igini as having no relationship with the PDP or the Akwa-Ibom State government as peddled about.
The letter dated June 30, 2022, subsequently demanded a retraction of the defamatory statements and an apology to be broadcast on Arise Television, Channels Television, AIT, TVC and to also be published on a full page in the Punch Newspapers, Guardian Newspapers, Vanguard Newspapers, Tribune Newspapers and Sunday Sun Newspapers within 48 hours.
The letter also demanded “sum of N1billion Naira as damages for the said defamatory statements.”
