The current Chairman of the NBA’s Welfare Committee, Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN, has emerged as the NBA President-elect.
The official result, made available to LAWYARD showed that Maikyau polled a total of 22,342 votes (representing 64.6%) out of a total tally of 34, 512 votes, with 244 abstentions.
His closest opponent, the pioneer Chairman of the NBA’s Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL), Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN, scored 10, 842 votes, while the immediate past General Secretary of the Association, Jonathan Taidi, scored 1380 votes to finish third.
Other winners include Linda Rose Bala who emerged as NBA 1st Vice President; Clement Ugo Chukwuemeka clinched the post of 2nd Vice President and AWLA President, Amanda Ego Asagba emerged as 3rd Vice President.
With respect to the position of the next NBA General Secretary, a former NBA Welfare Secretary, Adesina Adegbite maintained an unassailable lead against his opponents, even as former NBA Assistant Publicity Secretary, Habeeb Akorede Lawal clinched the position of Publicity Secretary following a last-gasp effort.
Mr. Charles Ajiboye emerged as the next NBA Assistant Publicity Secretary, having been in a pole-vault position against his only rival, Mr. Akachukwu Anthony Nwoye.
Mr. Daniel Ka-Ayii Kip similarly emerged as the next NBA Assistant General Secretary, even as the face-off between Lagos lawyer and former NBA Assistant General Secretary, Ms. Chinyere Obasi and NBA Welfare Committee member, Mr. Auta Nyada ended in a narrow win for Ms. Obasi.
The battle for the post of Treasurer was between NBA SPIDEL Treasurer Funmi Adeogun and NBA Bukuru NEC Representative, Caroline Ladidi-Bishop, with Ladidi-Bishop emerging victorious.
Meanwhile, Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama SAN has thanked his supporters for their “unquantifiable contributions towards my attempt to be elected as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Saturday, July 16, 2022.”
Noting that he deeply appreciated the support, he however observed that there were “numerous complaints regarding the conduct of the election.”
But Gadzama urged his supporters to “remain calm during this season and pledge your loyalty to the Bar. I salute you all for your support, once again.” Gadzama’s agent had in a petition to the ECNBA demanded an audit of the election, citing several “irregularities.”
On his part, Dr. Gerald Abonyi, a candidate for the post of 2nd Vice President has also queried the credibility of the elections. In a complaint made available to LAWYARD, he wrote: “It is unfortunate that we as Lawyers have this type of Election. There is no credibility in this voting pattern. There is no attempt to make us understand. The type of lead against me is inexplicable since Midnight. All I want is an explanation. My Supporters are worried. This pattern has never been seen before. We must interrogate this. That is why we are Lawyers. My results for the Office of the NBA 2nd Vice President can never pass the test of valid scrutiny. We need to be convinced.”
