The Liberian senate has confirmed Justice Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh as the country’s new chief justice.
She replaces Francis Saye Korkpor who leaves the service after retiring at the age of 70 years.
Justice Yuoh becomes the third female chief justice in Liberia’s 175 years of existence and the first since 2003.
Justice Yuoh was one of the Supreme Court’s two female judges at the time.
Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay, a male criminal court judge, has been nominated to take her place on the bench.
Frances Johnson Allison and Gloria Musu Scott were Liberia’s previous two female chief justices.
