A Magistrate Court in Birnin-Kebbi, Kebbi State, has arraigned Aliyu Shehu Jega, a Director in the state Ministry of Higher Education, and two others, Yahaya Badaru and Murtala Surajo, for allegedly beating the Chief Magistrate of Court 3 in Birnin-Kebbi, Umar Salisu Kokani.
The case was opened at the Magistrate Court (1) in Birnin Kebbi, with the 3 main suspects present.
According to the charges read by the court clerk, the suspects were arrested for criminal offenses sometime in September.
In his submission, Police Prosecution Officer, Jubril Abba requested that the case be postponed because witnesses in the case were not available and they had only collected the case file to prepare their defense before the court.
Mr. Danyaro, counsel for the plaintiff, stated in his submission that the suspects are charged with criminal conspiracy and assault on a chief magistrate.
According to the council, the first information report was that in September 2022, while performing ablution at the Ministry of Higher Education in Birnin Kebbi, one of the suspects approached him and an argument ensued between them, but as he made his way out, one of the suspects, a Director in the ministry slapped him and two others joined in beating the magistrate.
He explained that this is not the first time judges in the State had been attacked, in some cases they were assassinated in their homes.
”In this case, all we want is justice for the Magistrate”, Mr. Danyaro said.
Magistrate Hassan Kwaido adjourned the case till November 28 for further hearing after seeking the consent of parties in the case on appeal of the police prosecutor.
