In a viral video, Senator Adamu Muhammad Bulkachuwa, the current senator for the Bauchi North senatorial district, boasts about how he persuaded his wife, retired Appeal Court judge, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, to rule a certain way.
After reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 for justices of the Appeal Court in 2020, Justice Bulkachuwa stepped down from the bench.
“Particularly my wife, whose freedom and independence I encroached upon when she was in office, and she has been very tolerant and accepted my encroachment and extended her help to my colleagues,” Bulkachuwa said in the video.
He was interrupted from revealing further by the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan
Bulkachuwa’s statement was cut off by Lawan, who said, “I don’t think this is a good idea going in this direction.”
The senator’s confession has ignited outrage among the public, who view it as a blatant abuse of power and a violation of the principles of justice. Many have called for immediate investigations into the matter, demanding that the judiciary take swift action to address the allegations and restore public faith in the legal system.
Legal experts have expressed grave concerns over the implications of such misconduct within the judiciary. Justice integrity and fairness, which form the bedrock of any democratic society, are now in question. The independence of the judiciary, one of the pillars of democracy, appears to have been compromised, raising concerns about the potential erosion of the rule of law.
