NBA-ICLE to Host 4-Day Data Protection Training in October
In a recent announcement by Tobenna Erojikwe, Chairman of the NBA-ICLE (Nigerian Bar Association—Institute of Continuing Legal Education), legal practitioners and businesses in Nigeria are gearing up for a pivotal event. The NBA-ICLE Data Protection Training is scheduled to run from October 23rd to October 26th, 2023.
This training holds particular significance due to the recent presidential assent to the Nigeria Data Protection Act, which came into force in June 2023. The Act underscores the critical importance of privacy and data protection for Nigerian businesses and legal professionals.
The Data Protection Act is of paramount interest to lawyers for several reasons. Firstly, the Act fortifies the fundamental right to privacy and other rights and freedoms. Secondly, it imposes additional regulatory obligations on businesses and their vendors. Notably, it also ushers in a new realm for legal practitioners, focusing on data protection audit compliance and post-audit remedial services.
Recognising the roles law firms play as data controllers in various capacities, including as employers, service providers, and legal advisors, the NBA-ICLE has organised this training to help them grasp their data protection responsibilities.
