The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), based in Abuja, has mandated the Government of Benin Republic to pay 20 million CFA to Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho.
The compensation is determined as redress for the violation of Igboho’s fundamental rights and his unlawful detention.
The verdict was announced in a unanimous judgement by Justices Gberi-Bé Ouattara, Sengu M. Koroma, and Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Goncalves under the case marked ECW/CCJ/APP/15/22, titled Chief Sunday Adeyemo vs. Republic of Benin.
The court has specified that Benin Republic must adhere to the order within a three-month period and provide evidence of payment to the court.
Igboho, a prominent figure in the Yoruba Nation movement, was apprehended in Cotonou while attempting to leave the country for Germany in 2021.
His arrest followed his escape from Nigeria, where he was declared wanted by the Department of State Services (DSS) after a raid on his residence in Ibadan.
