BREAKING: Edo Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu Impeached

The Edo State House of Assembly, on Monday, impeached the state’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.

This impeachment followed the adoption of the report of the seven-man investigative panel set up by the Assembly to probe allegations of misconduct against Shaibu.

According to reports, the seven-man panel, led by Justice S.A. Omonua, concluded its investigation on Friday.

The panel was established by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, on March 22, 2024, following the Assembly’s resolution to investigate the impeachment petition against the deputy governor. The petition primarily centered on allegations of gross misconduct and perjury.

Alongside Justice Omonua, the panel comprised members such as Professor Theresa Akpoghome, Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu, Surveyor Andrew Oliha, Idris Abdulkareen, President Aigbokhian, and Mariam Erakhoba Ilavbare.

Meanwhile 38-year-old Omobayo Godwins has been sworn in as a replacement.

Following his confirmation as the deputy governor-designate by the State House of Assembly, Omobayo Godwins was sworn in at about 1.30pm at the Government House in Benin City, the State capital by the Chief Judge, Daniel Okungbowa at a brief event attended by supporters, State government functionaries and politicians.

Omobayo thanked his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, for finding him worthy of the appointment.
