Redeemer’s University Law Students Host National Competition on Legal & Ethical Implications of Emerging Technologies
Redeemer’s University Law Students Society, the umbrella body for law students at Osun-based private university, Redeemers University, is set to host a national competition exploring the legal and ethical implications of emerging technologies.
The contest formally dubbed the National Inter-Faculty Competition (NIFC) comprises four stages, three of which are to be held virtually for convenience and a final round to be held at the campus of the university in Ede, Osun State.
The competition supported by Davidson Oturu will coincide with a three-day conference discussing the theme of the competition and open to law students, tech enthusiasts, legal practitioners, judges and any interested persons. Registration for the conference is currently ongoing.
The first stage of the competition requires participating faculties of law in Nigeria to submit an essay on the topic ‘From Pixels to Policy: Unravelling the Legal and Ethical Dimensions of Nigeria’s Emerging Digital Economy’ in accordance with rules supplied by the competition’s planning committee. Successful teams will qualify for a second stage featuring an asynchronous debate which requires teams to shoot a video speaking in support or against a topic provided to them. The victorious teams from the second round will progress to the third stage of the competition, the Memorial Writing Stage.
At the Memorial Writing Stage, qualifying teams will be required to draft a memorial based on particular facts formulated by the NIFC planning committee and to be used for arguments at the final, the Mooting Stage.
The Mooting Stage is the last round and will feature the top four faculties with the best memorials. This round will hold physically in Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun state from May 1st to May 3rd, 2024. Winners of the competition will be announced and awarded prizes at the end of the Mooting Stage.
According to the NIFC planning committee, a sub-committee of the Academic Committee of the Redeemer’s University Law Students Society, the NIFC aims to foster the spirit of sportsmanship, cooperation and oneness amongst all faculties of law in Nigeria. The competition will also give students the opportunity to connect with other law students and established legal practitioners.
