The court has invalidated the EFCC’s assertion that Mrs. Emefiele is a ‘Wanted Person’. The court has instructed the commission to withdraw the publication and issue an apology.
A Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s declaration of Margaret, the wife of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, as a wanted person is not legally valid.
Mrs. Emefiele took legal action against the Commission and its chairman for labeling her as a wanted individual and publicly posting her images on their website without proper court authorization.
In legal suit number FHC/L/CS/262/2024, Mrs. Emefiele respectfully requested the court to declare that the EFCC’s action of including her name on its wanted persons list without a valid charge or court order constituted a violation of her fundamental human rights.
The judge further ruled that the EFCC must compensate the applicant with N3 million for violating their rights.
