The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, has apologized to one of the women arrested and brutalized by officers of the Area C Police Command in Surulere during Monday’s #EndSARS protests in the local government area.
The Lagos State governor made the apology while reacting to the victim’s tweet, where she shared a picture of her swollen face after being beaten by the officers.
In his response to the victim’s tweet, the governor said he was sorry about her experience, before revealing that the officers responsible had all been arrested and would face an orderly room trial immediately.
Governor Sanwoolu also revealed that a panel had been set up to look into all cases of police brutality. He said a compensation fund worth N200 million had been set up. He further apologized to any protester brutalized during any of the protest days.
Earlier in the day, the governor announced the names of 4 Police officers involved in the harassment of Protesters at the Area C Command, saying they had been apprehended. He revealed their names as:
- Bagou Michael
- Ekpoudom Etop
- Nnamdi Madura
- Akinyemi Benson
It will be recalled that a viral video from Monday’s protest on Surulere showed officers of the Area C Police Command dragging two women to their station, battering them as they did.
The apology by the Lagos State governor is the latest in the steps taken by the Nigerian government to quell the ongoing protests and appease the youths who continue to take to the streets to voice out against police brutality.
