The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has launched a digital stamp and seal for legal practitioners across the country, aimed at curbing the activities of fake lawyers and streamlining the preparation and filing of legal documents. The outgoing NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), introduced the electronic stamp and seal as part of his administration’s vision to fully digitize the legal system.
Maikyau highlighted the association’s recent success with an online-based election, which allowed members to participate from various parts of the country, setting a new standard for electoral transparency and efficiency. He suggested that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should consider adopting a similar digital approach to reduce the costs and challenges associated with traditional elections.
He emphasized the benefits of technology in advancing the legal profession, noting that the registration for the 2024 Annual General Conference (AGC) was conducted entirely online without involving third-party contractors. Maikyau underscored that these technological advancements are not only improving the legal profession but also contributing to the nation’s development.
The NBA General Secretary, Adeshina Adegbite, added that the digital stamp and seal system, deployed through blockchain technology, ensures authenticity and security. He noted that lawyers could now apply for and receive their stamps and seals within minutes, marking a significant step forward in the digitization of legal processes in Nigeria.
