The secretariat of the United Nation’s Convention for Climate Change (UNCCC) recently published Nigeria’s Long Term Vision for low greenhouse gas emissions.
The document is intended as Nigeria’s first contribution towards the invitation in Article 4.19 of the Paris Agreement to communicate long-term low greenhouse gas emissions development strategies (LT-LEDS). It was developed between 2020 and 2021, and reflects a broad set of views to help Nigeria prepare for the construction of a full long-term strategy to explore how the country can achieve its new climate ambition.
It will be recalled that at the recent Conference of Parties, COP26, held in Glasgow, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari announced that Nigeria will cut its carbon emissions and reach net-zero by 2060. The President subsequently signed into law a new climate bill that creates five-year emission budgets, with a view to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions between 2050 and 2070.
