No less than 159 Nigerians waived off rights to remain citizens of Nigeria in 2022.
This was disclosed by Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Interior, Shuaib Belgore at the 64th session of the State House Ministerial Briefing Organised by the Presidential Communications team at the Aso Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Drawing comparisons between the situation in 2022 and the previous years, Belgore said the 159 recorded last year eclipsed the 150 Nigerians who renounced their citizenships between 2006 to 2021.
Speaking about demands for passports, Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola said the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) issued 1,899,683 last year, representing the highest number of passport booklets in over seven years.
He said the massive exodus of Nigerians out of the country in search of greener pastures influenced high demands for passports.
