The Nigerian Bar Association, (NBA), as a Non-Governmental Organisation is principally founded with the aim of promoting and protecting Human Rights, the Rule of Law, and good governance in Nigeria in particular, and in Africa in general. In recent times, the perception of the NBA as a potent watchdog of democracy by the public has been at an all-time low, especially due to the incessant cases of wanton disregard for due process and rule of law by the government. Flagrant abuse of people’s fundamental human rights by law enforcement agencies, to which many lawyers have been at the receiving end in the course of discharging their professional duties remains the order of the day.
This disenchantment has been more amongst lawyers many of whom have been questioning the utility of the NBA. The association can scarcely discharge the functions it has been saddled with, especially to its members by protecting their interest and welfare.
That is why Olumide Akpata’s candidature at this time comes as a beacon of hope to not just members of the NBA, but the general populace at large. Because of his antecedents and reputation for getting things done with swift efficiency and excellence, hope is renewed.
