The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Muhammad has reportedly resigned his office, citing ill-health.
Justice Muhammad’s resignation is coming on the heels of a crisis rocking the Supreme Court over alleged lack of transparent leadership and poor welfare of Justices of the apex court.
According to Channels Television, sources close to the CJN stated that Justice Muhammad resigned on Sunday night, citing ill-health as the reason for his decision.
Arrangements are also reportedly ongoing to swear in the next most senior justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria while a formal announcement of the CJN’s resignation is expected to be made shortly.
The Punch however reports that when contacted, the Special Adviser on Media and Communication to CJN, Ahuraka Yusuf Isah, said, “All I know is that he’s going to declare open a workshop this morning at the NJI (National Judicial Institute).”
