CJN Urges Judges to Leave Positive Legacies for Posterity

In a powerful speech at a valedictory court session in honor of the late Justice Stanley Shenko Alagoa, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, urged judges and Nigerians in positions of authority to make a positive impact on society. Justice Kekere-Ekun emphasized the importance of leaving behind legacies that would be remembered for their positive influence on humanity.

During the session held at the Supreme Court complex on Wednesday, the CJN acknowledged the passing of Justice Alagoa, but also celebrated the enduring legacy he left behind. She described the late justice as a man of wisdom, integrity, and humility, whose judicial contributions and personal qualities would continue to inspire future generations.

“His lordship’s passing reminds us that life is fleeting, and we must strive to leave behind meaningful footprints,” Justice Kekere-Ekun stated. “Even in death, his legacy stands as a beacon of wisdom and unwavering integrity.”

The CJN praised Justice Alagoa not only for his remarkable intellect but also for his simplicity, courage, and commitment to justice. She encouraged his family to carry forward the values he upheld throughout his life.

Also speaking at the session, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, praised the late justice for his firm and courageous stance on legal matters. Fagbemi emphasized how Justice Alagoa’s contributions continue to influence national discourse and highlighted his role in promoting governance reforms through the law.

Justice Alagoa, who hailed from Ogbolamabiri Nembe in Bayelsa state, passed away on December 5, 2024. His legacy, however, continues to be celebrated, with the AGF commending the CJN for organizing the special court session in tribute to his contributions.

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, called on Nigerians to honor Justice Alagoa’s memory by committing to the principles of justice, integrity, and the rule of law. He urged citizens to follow the example set by the late jurist in their efforts to contribute to the nation’s development.
