The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled in favor of Alhaji Alhassan Ado Doguwa, awarding him N25 million in damages due to false accusations made by the Kano State Government and the police.
Mr. Doguwa, a member of the House of Representatives representing the Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency, was wrongly accused of murder during the February 25, 2023, general election, allegedly involving members of the NNPP.
Upon his arraignment, Mr. Doguwa, affiliated with the APC and serving as the House Committee Chairman of Downstream Petroleum, accused the police and Kano State Government of partiality.
His complaint prompted a review of the police investigation by the authorities, resulting in the discontinuation of the investigation by the outgoing APC administration in the state, clearing Mr. Doguwa of wrongdoing.
However, upon assuming office, the new governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, announced his intention to prosecute Mr. Doguwa, alleging his involvement in the deaths of over 15 individuals.
Mr. Yusuf, a member of the NNPP, declared that his administration would reopen and pursue the case diligently.
“In the same vein, we shall investigate all cases of political violence that led to the loss of lives and properties across the state in the last eight years.
“The infamous case of Alhassan Ado Doguwa, who allegedly sponsored the maiming and murder of over 15 innocent souls in Tudun Wada Local Government, will be pursued to its logical conclusion,” the new governor said in his inaugural speech.
Mr. Doguwa initiated legal action against the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, the Governor of Kano State, and the Attorney-General of Kano State, alleging a violation of his rights to dignity, liberty, and freedom of movement.
In a certified true copy of a judgment from the Federal High Court dated December 5, 2023, recently made public, in case number FHC/ABJ/ABJ/CS/714/2019, Judge D.U. Okorowo acquitted Mr. Doguwa of the murder accusation.
