Chief Judge John Tsoho has approved the redeployment of 94 justices across Federal High Court divisions countrywide. A January 8 resumption deadline was given to the affected judges in Tsoho’s posting order issued Tuesday.
The mass redeployment aims to boost manpower and optimize distribution of judicial officers following the recent appointment of 23 new Federal High Court judges
A statement from Tsoho’s office indicated the transfers were necessitated by “the appointment of 23 new judges and other imperatives.” The judiciary has been pushing for more hands to ease caseloads burdening judges and fast-track justice delivery.
Some major locations seeing shuffling of Federal High Court justices include Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Benin and Kano. The exercise may see elevated acting capacity appointments to fill voids in some jurisdictions.
Sources say the posting could unsettle judges in zones with security challenges if not handled sensitively. But Chief Judge Tsoho assured all necessary support would be extended during transitions.
The last nationwide posting of Federal High Court Judges was in 2020 when 47 justices got reassigned in one fell swoop. The court currently has about 130 judges manning various divisions.
