Gunmen in Imo State have attacked a correctional facility and police command in Owerri, the Imo State capital, freeing some inmates in the process
The number of inmates released from the facility is yet unknown.
The attack was said to have happened in the early hours of Monday with heavy gunfire, while the police command and some vehicles parked in the vicinity were set ablaze by the gunmen.
Although details of the attack remain sketchy, the armed men are suspected to be members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its security arm, Eastern Security Network (ESN) using dynamites, heavy explosives, and AK-47 rifles during the attack.
The police have blamed recent attacks on its facilities and personnel in the south-south and south-eastern region on IPOB members with some suspects already arrested.
