The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Justice Ekaette Obot has released the record of proceedings reflecting the exchange between the judge and a lawyer, Inibehe Effiong prior to Effiong’s committal to prison for contempt of court.
The release of the court’s record of proceedings follows the filing of a suit by Effiong at a Federal High Court in Uyo for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights. In the suit, Effiong prayed the Federal High Court to direct Justice Obot to furnish him with a copy of the July 27 judgment.
Mr Effiong also urged the court to declare as illegal and unconstitutional, the judge’s refusal to release the conviction order, as it violates Section 36 (7) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
In the suit, counsel to the plaintiff, Femi Falana, SAN, said Mr Effiong is entitled to a copy of the judgment within seven days of the conclusion of the case.
Effiong was committed to prison on July 27, 2022 by Justice Obot, for alleged contempt of court.
The record of proceedings were shared on popular micro-blogging website, Twitter by a lawyer, Mordecai Adejo.
The CJ of Akwa Ibom State has, following the action filed against her, released her records of proceedings in the @InibeheEffiong's case.
I dare to say that acts like this are the reasons why electronic recordings should be introduced into our courts.
