The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has issued a new ultimatum to the government over the continuous non-implementation of financial autonomy of the judiciary while it also expressed disapproval of the method of fuel subsidy removal and non-payment of peculiar allowance of its members.
In a communique issued at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Saturday, September 2, 2023, in Abuja, the Union disclosed thus:
“The NEC in session after an exhaustive deliberation on all issues resolved as follows:-
1. NEC in session observed with dismay the ill preparation of the Federal Government in the removal of fuel subsidy and the attendant effect on the citizen and thus endorses the decision of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at its meeting held on Thursday the 31st of August, 2023
2. NEC in session commends the National Income Salary and Wages Commission (NISWC) for releasing the circular on peculiar allowance for staff on consolidated public service salary structure (CONPSSS) of the Federal Judiciary and urges the National Judicial Council (NJC) to implement the said circular to ensure effective industrial harmony.
3. NEC in session frowns at the continuous non-implementation of the Financial Autonomy of the Judiciary by the State Governors despite the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), judicial pronouncement and repeated demands for its implementation by the UNION.
4. NEC in session thereby issues a 21 day ultimatum for the full implementation of the Financial Autonomy of Judiciary, failing which, the UNION may not guarantee industrial harmony in the States.
Issued this 2nd day of September, 2023 at Abuja.
