The President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem has on Monday commenced special court sittings at the Abuja Division of the Court.
It would be recalled that on the 7th of January 2025, the Hon. President of the Court, commenced special court sittings in Enugu with the sole aim of decongesting the court and ensure speedy dispensation of justice.
During the special sitting on Monday, the Presiding Justice of the Division, Hon. Justice Hamma A. Barka, welcomed members of the Bar and those present wishing them a happy new year.
Justice Barka stated that the Court was privileged to have my lord, the Hon. President of the Court of Appeal presiding in the Division as it is the hope of the Court that her presence will nurture a new year full of promise.
In response, learned Counsel on behalf of both parties from the inner Bar, appreciated His Lordships and wished them a happy new year.
The Hon. President of the Court, Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, CFR in her remarks, noted that the aspirations of the Court and legal practitioners is to uphold the will of God, defend and uphold the integrity of our great nation Nigeria.
The legal profession she said, is one that must take the lead whether we like it or not. “We claim that we are learned and we are learned in everything. So, we have to try and work hard to ensure that we apply our learnedness for the progress of our nation, of our citizens who are very resilient and very hard working and very happy people in spite of everything”.
His Lordship who presided over the panel alongside her Brother Justices Hon. Justice Hamma A. Barka and Hon. Justice J.O.K Oyewole, thus admonished learned counsels to learn how to identify processes, paginate processes, and equip themselves with the rules of court when they appear before the Court.
His Lordship equally reminded learned counsel to use the rules of court as a guide because it contains many things they could take advantage of.
After the court proceedings, Hon. Justice J.O.K Oyewole expressed his gratitude as he appreciated the Hon. President of the Court of Appeal for opening the 2025 sitting at the Division.
He therefore, appreciated my lords, the legal practitioners who sat through the proceedings despite having finished their matters much earlier, the hardworking support staff and security personnel who have been of great help during the proceedings, wishing everyone a beautiful New Year.
