In a thought-provoking attendance at the ongoing NBA Ota Law Week, Tobenna Erojikwe, Chairman of the Governing Board of the NBA-ICLE and Partner at The Law Crest LLP, delivered a compelling intervention, shedding light on the indispensable role of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in the promotion and preservation of the rule of law as well as the protection of fundamental human and people’s rights.
 
The Law Week, bearing the theme “Law and Nation Building,” saw Erojikwe participating in the opening session held on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. His remarks primarily centred on Justice Sonia Akinbiyi’s thought-provoking presentation, which squarely placed substantial responsibility on lawyers and the NBA within the context of nation-building.
 
Tobenna Erojikwe began by commending Justice Akinbiyi for her incisive perspective, stating, “I applaud Justice Akinbiyi for boldly asserting that the role of lawyers and the NBA is pivotal in the nation-building process.” He emphasised the compelling need for NBA members to reflect on their attitudes and confront the potential compromising influence of external financing on the bar’s leadership.
 
Regarding the pressing issue of lawyers attempting to bribe judges, Tobenna Erojikwe advocated a resolute approach, stating, “We must uphold the integrity of the legal profession. The proper procedure is to report any instance of bribery to the police and steadfastly demand that such matters be vigorously prosecuted.”
 
Tobenna Erojikwe underscored the paramount importance of an unimpeachable judiciary, asserting, “A single instance of corruption within the judiciary is an affront to our nation’s principles, as the judiciary occupies a place of paramount importance in our nation.” He expressed his deep appreciation for the keynote speaker’s insights into issues related to the separation of powers and the pivotal role of a functional system in quelling lawlessness and impunity.
 
In his closing remarks, Tobenna Erojikwe issued a compelling call to action, urging a comprehensive reevaluation of the legal profession. He emphasised the urgency of robust self-regulation and the inculcation of values that unequivocally align with the profession’s fundamental objectives. Tobenna Erojikwe concluded, saying, “It is only through these critical steps that we can restore the dignity of our noble profession and empower it to fully realise its intended role in our society.”
