The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) has assured the Federal Government of the readiness of private schools under it’s fold to resume for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and other terminal examinations.
The Minister of Education, Adamu, announced the reversal of the government’s earlier position on school’s resumption, saying the atmosphere is yet unsafe for teaching and learning in the country.
Yomi Otubela, National President of the association at a press conference held virtually on Monday, said private schools across the country are prepared to participate in the examination, noting that the required protocols as recommended by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in the management of the coronavirus disease would be observed.
He said, “I can vouch for our members that have gone through safety measure in their schools. We are over 100 percent ready for transitional classes to resume.
“NAPPS, as a responsive and responsible association, has shown it readiness to ensure the safe phase reopening of schools for SS3 and JSS3 students in private schools in the country by ensuring members schools strictly adhere to the safety protocols recommended by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the school environment.
“Even though we appreciate the safety concerns of the federal government, private schools are fully prepared for safe reopening of schools with investment already made to process safety equipment as advised by the NDDC to ensure the safe reopening of schools nationwide. “
Otubela called on the Federal and State governments to release funds to ministries of education, equip public schools with necessary facilities so their candidates could take the examination with their private school counterparts.
Lamenting on the suspension, Otubela said the students are already traumatized. They were already psyched up for the examination.
Otubela further disclosed , “We have formed a task force to monitor compliance by our members. Also, the government should have a quality and safety assurance team to also go round.
Meanwhile, WAEC has reacted on the development, saying it is within the legitimate power of governments of the five-member countries to make such decisions.
